PLEASANT GROVE — A Pleasant Grove man was arrested Friday and accused of killing his mother.
Gage Anthony Dinehart, 21, was booked into the Utah County Jail for investigation of murder and obstruction of justice.
Just before midnight Thursday, Pleasant Grove police responded to a report of gunfire in the area of 200 West and 200 North.
"The (caller) reported hearing three gunshots and observing a body in the middle of the road. The (caller) stated both vehicle doors were open to a blue Tahoe where the body was observed," a police booking affidavit states.
Officers responding to the scene found the body of a 40-year-old woman lying in the road next to an SUV. Police say she had a gunshot wound to her chest.
As paramedics were setting up nearby, waiting for police to allow them into the crime scene, they said they were approached by a man near 100 East and 300 North.
"The male told paramedics he had committed a crime. The medics advised the male was acting erratically and said he was involved in the shooting," the affidavit states.
The paramedics told officers about the man, later identified as Dinehart, and police found him at 400 North and 300 East near the Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
"Police made contact with the individual and identified him as the 21-year-old son of the deceased. The male admitted to police that he had been involved in a crime," investigators said.
Police reported finding a handgun in the cemetery and other clothing belonging to Dinehart.
"Gage told officers that, 'I shot my mom.' He told officers the gun he used was in the grass near his hoodie. Officers located the gun and hoodie at approximately 500 N. 100 East," according to the affidavit.
Police say Dinehart and his mother had been arguing earlier that day.
"Gage was agitated and demanding money from his mother. The victim told her husband she was leaving to go to the bank and take Gage back to the bar," the woman's husband told police, according to the affidavit.
A witness told detectives that he was awakened by the sound of two gunshots. The witness looked out the window to see a man in a hoodie standing over a person on the ground and then the person fired another shot, according to police. A shell casing and blood were found in the vehicle, indicating the woman may have first been shot inside the SUV. The vehicle is equipped with a camera, the husband told police. Investigators were in the process of trying to collect video on Friday.
The name of the woman has not yet been released.
