Sunoco gas station at 1607 S. Michigan Ave. in Saginaw
SAGINAW, MI — For the third time in less than a week, a Saginaw business was the target of an armed robbery.
As with one of the prior holdups, though, the culprits fled without receiving the cash they were after.
This most recent would-be robbery occurred just before 2 a.m. on the Sunoco gas station at 1607 S. Michigan Ave. on the city’s West Side. Two masked suspects entered the station, displayed a gun, and demanded cash.
The clerk refused to hand over the money and told the scofflaws they were calling the police, prompting them to flee, police said.
One suspect was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with a white logo, blue jean shorts, and red and white shoes. The other was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black jeans, and black shoes. Both wore black masks.
The previous two robberies within the city occurred the evenings of July 8 and 10, both carried out by a lone masked man.
The former happened at the Family Dollar at 1908 S. Michigan Ave. and saw a lone suspect show a handgun to employees and get away with more than $500. The latter occurred at the Little Caesars at 904 Gratiot Ave and again saw the culprit approach the counter and demand cash from an employee.
The employee told the man to repeat himself, which he did as he lifted his shirt to show he had a handgun in his waistband. Not impressed, the employee walked away without handing over the cash.
Foiled, the masked man fled the pizzeria empty handed.
Less than two hours later, a similar robbery occurred in Saginaw Township. Just after 10 p.m., a man wearing a white hooded sweatshirt and black skintight pants with his entire face covered entered the BP Express Stop at 4480 State St. in Saginaw Township.
“The male subject walked past a couple of customers standing in line, produced a semiautomatic handgun from his waistband, and told the clerk to open the cash register,” said Saginaw Township Police Detective Sgt. Chad Brooks.
The clerk handed over “a very small amount of cash” and the robber then fled, Brooks said.
No one was physically injured in any of the incidents.
Detectives are reviewing surveillance camera footage in the holdups. They have not yet identified the suspects and no arrests have been made.
“We are asking our business community to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity/persons on or about their property,” said Saginaw Police Detective Sgt. Oscar Lopez. “It’s only a matter of time before we catch up to these culprits.”
Police are asking anyone with information on these incidents to call them at 989-759-176 or, to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-422-5245.
