Kenobi: 10 Obi-Wan Traits That Make Him The Franchise's Wise Old Man Archetype

From the tip of his hood to the toes of his boots, Kenobi has demonstrated a clear and perfected skill set that meets the archetype.

Mr. Miyagi, Gandalf the Grey, and Mufasa are three of cinema's wisest and most famous mentors. Through their guidance, teachings, and even magical involvement, it's the wise-old-sage archetype that pushes the protagonist/hero/heroine to take the chance to be great. Although many beloved and treasured characters have taken on this role, there are few who nail it as well as Obi-Wan Kenobi.

While it's true that Master Yoda outranks him in seniority and experience, it was Old Ben who graced the scene first and set the bar for Jedi Masters that followed. From the tip of his hood to the toes of his boots, Kenobi has demonstrated a clear and perfected skill set that meets the archetype time and time again.

While this isn't a mandatory requirement for the wise-old-man archetype, the more perceptive audience members will note that most characters who fit the description have a certain amount of facial hair. Although Obi-Wan's isn't to Gandalf's length, it does have a certain wizardly quality when paired with the hood of his robes.

This is more of a visual and character feature than something that magically appears when assuming a mentor role, but it's almost become a calling card of the character type. From Obi-Wan to Mr. Miyagi, to even characters like Rafiki, an experienced mentor is marked by the quality of his beard.

From the moment viewers were first introduced to the character, they knew what kind of person Kenobi was right from his first lines of dialogue. While this is mostly thanks to the incomparable acting skills of Alec Guinness, Kenobi's distinct vocalizations, manner of speaking, and choice of words have been greatly recreated by Ewan McGreggor in the newer films as well as James Arnold Taylor in the animated spinoffs.

Right from his first "Hello there," he carries his tone and personality with a certain flavor of strange dignity. Viewers are presented with an old mystic who's been living out in the desert for who knows how long, but he still has a friendly, somewhat professorial quality to him as well.

Like so many eccentric academic types in fiction, Kenobi's wit is on par with his lightsaber in terms of potency. Not only is the old master able to disarm and conquer foes on the field of battle or locked in a lightsaber duel, but he's able to outsmart, outwit, and even outcharm his way to a solution.

Pair these qualities with his sharp and sometimes dry sense of humor and Kenobi can be considered one of the wiliest characters in the Star Wars universe. He would have made quite the ally to Padme but he's "not brave enough for politics."

He can be funny, he can be charming, and he can even be deceptive when the need arises, but Kenobi's intellect and brainpower could rival even that of Master Yoda's on multiple occasions. Obi-Wan Kenobi will always be known for his mentorship, his mysticism, and his skills with a lightsaber, but he's also known for his mental fortitude as well.

He's a master tactician, a skilled strategist, and has even been referred to as "The Great Negotiator." These are qualities of a superior intellect cultivated by study and experience, making it practically a mandatory asset for someone of Kenobi's archetype.

It's been established that Kenobi is a man with an exceptionally brilliant mind, but like so many in his position, he also comes with just a touch of eccentricity to set him apart from other members of the Jedi Council. The first time viewers are ever introduced to the character has him covered by a hooded robe, flapping his arms, and making eerie noises to scare away a group of Tusken Raiders. That's not exactly the behavior of one of the greatest mentors in the galaxy.

That being said, his wise-yet-weird flavor is one that many in his position share. It could even be said that Master Yoda took inspiration from this particularly colorful quality during the creation of The Empire Strikes Back.

To put it in the bluntest of terms, Kenobi is the reason certain fans refer to the Jedi as "space wizards" and maybe the reason the Armorer refers to them as "a race of sorcerers" in The Mandalorian. If the lightsaber is taken away, Kenobi is a bearded, robe-wearing master of a mystical art form.

If that description were applied to any other genre, they'd be classified as a Merlin-level wizard in a heartbeat. It's enough to make a fan wonder just how much more Kenobi can do with his grip on the Force.

Jumping off the previous quality, Obi-Wan could easily be considered the Merlin to Anakin/Luke's King Arthur. The way he treats both his apprentices with a kind, almost fatherly approach is not only endearing, but it reflects one of the strongest aspects of the man's character.

The relationship between Master and Padawan is one of the most explored bonds in the Star Wars universe, and both of Obi-Wan's pupils go on to change the galaxy. His bond with Anakin Skywalker is both one of the strongest and most tragic in the canon, and his teachings and guidance inspire Luke to go on and become a Jedi Master, but both are practically nonexistent without his involvement.

There's a reason Kenobi was granted the rank of Jedi Master. Again, second only to the likes of Master Yoda, Kenobi has a clear and present mastery of the Jedi ways. From the way he handles his lightsaber to the mind tricks, energy manipulation, and other Force powers, he is by definition a professional at his craft.

As stated previously, Kenobi doesn't need his lightsaber to prove that he is indeed worthy of the rank of master. His combination of mental fortitude, wisdom, and command of the Force makes him more than qualified for the title.

Anyone can use the Force, it's the energy that flows through all living things. However, it takes a true master to understand, wield, utilize, and understand this cosmic energy the way Kenobi does. There's practically a spiritual, Zen master quality about the way he becomes one with the Force.

Going the way of most Jedi, Kenobi eventually gives himself over to the Force to achieve his desired spiritual state and becomes "more powerful than [Vader] can possibly imagine." By surrendering to the energy of the cosmos, he achieves enlightenment beyond the measure of the typical resident of the galaxy far, far away.
